Recovery and Me
Recovery is wild because nobody warned me that getting clean would turn me into a full-time emotional support human for myself.
I came to NA thinking y’all were gonna teach me how to stop using drugs.
Instead, y’all got me out here journaling, praying, making gratitude lists, and discussing my feelings like I’m on a spiritual reality show.
In active addiction I avoided mirrors.
Now in recovery I accidentally become the meeting greeter, host, secretary, and somehow the person saying, “Keep coming back.”
I amaze my damn self.
And why does everybody in recovery become a philosopher?
You ask somebody how they’re doing and they hit you with:
“Well, spiritually I’m growing through my defects.”
Dude… I was just gonna ask if you wanted to co-host.
Recovery also got me doing things I never thought I’d do:
- going to bed on purpose
- drinking water voluntarily
- apologizing when I’m wrong
- using words like “accountability” without immediately needing a nap
And let’s talk about sponsors.
Mine can hear insanity in my voice before I even finish the sentence.
Me: “So I had an idea—”
Sponsor: “Absolutely not.”
But honestly, recovery is hilarious because we’re all out here trying to become responsible adults one day at a time while still losing our vape, our keys, and emotional stability before noon.
And somehow NA people will completely fall apart emotionally… then end the share with:
“But I’m grateful to be here.”
And everybody claps because we ALL understand that level of spiritual chaos.
Still, I’d rather be sitting in an NA meeting laughing with addicts in recovery than out there living the same nightmare over and over.
Today I’m clean, caffeinated, overly dramatic, spiritually under construction, grateful as hell for this program, and even happier I met this specific bunch of idiots.
